Design company Hipgnosis had many obsessive themes in their work. A recurring one theme was the 2D/3D concept, i.e. suggesting a 3D component to an essentially 2D event. Here, Peter is thrusting his hands out of the picture and back onto the photo surface, scratching it into strips. The photo, by Hipgnosis photographer Peter Christopherson, was taken down town in New York on a cold and windy day, a couple of
blocks away from where Peter would later buy an apartment.

Storm Thorgerson, from Hipgnosis, introduced Peter to the work that Les Krims was doing with Polaroids. They began experimenting with hundreds of Polaroids, having fun squashing and squeezing and smearing the developing images, a technique later known as
Krimsography. The unsettling yet startling results were then re- photographed with black and white film.

"The artwork on album 4 was something that I'd been working on with a sculptor called Malcolm Poynter who's work I thought was really strong, he used to do these things out of very dark heads." "There was a book I'd seen too, on distortions. A little like fairground mirrors and we started using that with some Millonex? which is a sort of bendy mirror." The final sleeve art is from an experimental video Peter directed with Malcolm Poynter, with professional help from his editor friend David Gardner. The cover features the distorted image of Peter. "My memory of this project, which was crucially pre Photoshop, was us dragging around Flexi Mirrors and Fresnel Lenses, and some sculptures, and then having a very creative (if chaotic) time. It was good!" - Malcolm Poynter.

    Art

The cover photograph is of the fully made-up 'monkeyman' Gabriel. "This photo was shot in December 1982 at the Universal Amphitheatre,
the Los Angeles leg of Peter's "Security" Tour. During the performance of "Lay Your Hands On Me" Peter would look into the crowd in a very intense way before throwing himself onto the raised hands of the
audience. That was also a rare moment to get the blue of his eyes on camera. And I got it! A couple of months later Peter came to my house in LA as I had
prepared a slide show for him to choose photos for his upcoming Live album. When this photo came up we all liked it as the best. I was knocked out when I saw the final result on "Plays Live". The original photo was a 35 mm of his face and arms, but the image that
graced the front cover was a courageous tight crop of his face. Hence the grainy effect." - Armando Gallo

    Passion
    Art

In 1989 Julian Grater finished a body of work for his first major solo exhibition at a public gallery in the UK. This included an eight part series of self-portraits - more specifically referred to by Grater as Self Images as he felt this was a more psychologically penetrating terminology. This cycle of brutally dark and psychologically rendered drawings clearly referred to a state of mind or being, examined
through the prism of extreme candour. Peter Gabriel selected one of these drawings for the album cover of
Passion. Passion is the soundtrack, 5 years in the making, for a Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ. Peter felt that whilst the
artwork had not been specifically commissioned and created to accompany the project, the drawing had a number of particular qualities that he felt resonated in a powerful way with the rich, cultural fusion of the music's complex soundscape. The album cover artwork was awarded album cover of the year 1989.
Grater. 'Drawing Study for Self Image - 1987' is originally from an eight part series consisting of
Charcoal /Graphite / Paste / Acrylic / Bitumen / Beeswax / Dry Pigment/ Straw and Flower petals on paper.

    Paper size: 40" x 50"

    Art

The original photo session was at the late Robert Mapplethorpe's New York loft studio in 1986. He spent some time getting to know Peter and during the session got him talking about many subjects of which he was passionate. Mapplethorpe explained that he felt his subjects revealed more of themselves when talking about things they loved. At a time when
many portrait artists were looking for vulnerability, Mapplethorpe was looking for confidence. Peter really enjoyed getting to know Mapplethorpe and found him smart, funny and charming. "Robert Mapplethorpe is one of the great photographers. I was really happy with the results. I had this idea to do some with my eyes shut, so you have one which is on the front with eyes shut and then others with eyes open." - Peter Gabriel The photo selected for the album cover was initially used for the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Nils-Udo talks about the work created for the Ovo cover: "My first contact with Peter Gabriel was a phone call from him asking me if I would be interested in creating a cover for a new project that
was in conception. He was aware of my work and invited me to the Real World Studios in Box in England to discuss the project. The meeting went very well and it was arranged for me to return to Box to carry out the installation. I created the nest on the pond at Real World. It was supported by tree trunks, so was a very heavy structure. The figure in the nest was the child of a Real World employee"

Photographed by Susan Derges at her studio in Devon, England, a blurred portrait of Peter faces the viewer directly; his image is reflected and contorted over and over in water droplets, which are literally frozen in mid-air using a strobe light. "An image is always the briefest, frozen moment of a continuous stream of events, and mysteriously we somehow always make them what they are to us. So when Peter came to the studio to record the cover image and we started to play with this musical jet of vibrating water, the unexpected and magical happened. Droplets captured images of his face, splashed across the palm of his hand and I seem to remember at one point a fire eating sequence that was fairly crazy but not as good as the portrait we ended up with and the hand that we also used on the album was an inspired moment just before he left the studio. It was a good day" - Susan Derges - Recollections from a day

The image was discovered by Stephen Gschmeissner via a scanning electron microscope which uses a finely focused beam of electrons to construct a 3D image of each specimen that can be magnified up to a million times. Designer Marc Bessant who selected and developed the image expands; "I was struck by how simple, honest and sensuous the music was sounding with just the two elements - Peter and the strings. 'Two' was important - two parts, two acts, two songs, two albums - a shared experience, one dependent on the other. I wanted the images and colours to be seductive and sensual (touching
on sexual), perhaps even a little tense, a relationship between one another. The eventual micrograph of corpuscles we discovered was perfect (although still needed cleaning up and some colouring) - so graceful and calm, yet with all the passionate, fleshy associations that blood carries". - Marc Bessant

The eventual micrograph of corpuscles we discovered was perfect (although still needed cleaning up and some colouring) - so graceful and calm, yet with all the passionate, fleshy associations that blood carries". - Marc Bessant
