Babeti Soukous
Tabu Ley Seigneur Rochereau and Afrisa International Orchestra
Tabu Ley is one of the greatest stars of Zaïrean, and therefore all African, popular music. His career bridges decades; from the fifties when, as a high-flying teenage singer/composer, he made his debut in the band of the Great Kalle (father of Congolese pop), to the seventies and eighties.
This recording was made at Real World Studios from a live performance given to an audience of friends and invitees. Many of the numbers on the album represent landmarks in the Rochereau career, from very early soukous to classics of the seventies.
The racing, skipping rhythms of their latest numbers rub shoulders with older rhumbas, featuring delicious Latin-influenced horn choruses and jazzy saxophone.
